Many sources suggest to shut off your ignition if idling for more than one minute. One source even says that if you’re going to be idling for more than 10 seconds, you are wasting fuel, losing money and creating unnecessary carbon emissions as a result. Turning your car on and off has just a minimal effect on the battery and smart motor, especially in comparison with the damage that frequent, long periods of idling does to your engine.
