No, it was a shock to the public that something of that magnitude could happen. As the days and weeks wore on, BP got more and more criticism for not having the situation under control. Environmentalists were concerned about the long term effects of the spill, not to mention the thousands of animals that died. The seafood industry in the Gulf came to a halt because of the toxins in the water. Millions of gallons of oil were wasted. It was a huge and devastating situation that seemed to drag on without end.
