The May 18, 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens killed 57 people. The deaths were caused by a combination of intense heat, suffocation from ash or being buried by debris from the eruption.
The amount of ash that was propelled into the atmosphere and was then blown across the entire globe, is sure to have claimed more lives after the eruption as well.
