If more ice melts, there would then be more liquid state water in the oceans. If there is more liquid water in the ocean, then ocean bound vessels would then have to travel more, thus using more gas. However it would take an incredible amount of liquid water introduced into the oceans in order to actually affect the amount of gas used by ocean bound vessels.
This is a major concern for the Arctic. Scientists believe we may have an ice-free NW passage year round sometime within the next 20 years. This increase in shipping will have untold impacts on the fragile Arctic ecosystem.
