Most electronics will not use as much energy when turned off but still plugged in as they will when turned on. However, the energy used is still significant. In 2007, a study estimated that 5% of the electricity generated in the US was lost to useless “vampire energy” – but that this percentage might rise to 20% by 2010. Almost any electronic will use up some amount of energy whenever it is plugged in, so it’s just to pull the plug out of the wall when you turn it off.
