The color variation in males can be attributed to sex steroids, six to eight weeks prior to and during courtship males may aquire a bright orange or gold hue that is still related to their dominance status. Mature females on the other hand retain their green coloring. As the iguanas get older their color becomes more uniform and can vary basied on its mood, temperature, health or even social status. Their color change process aids in thermoregulation.
