Although there are a few hundred fuel cell cars in California, they are hardly a serious choice for consumers. And like so many other issues dealing with economics and consumerism, this one depends a great deal on companies and infrastructure. Before fuel cell cars can truly becoe a viable option, there will need to be fueling stations for them, and of course, decent consumer cars on the market. However, Honda and Toyota plan to have proper, consumer style fuel cell cars in production by 2015, and thanks to the works of a few avante garde entrepreneurs, we should have the infrastructure in place by then, at least on the east coast.
I hope this helped!
