Americans should have started worrying about population size some time ago. The U.S. is the 3rd most populous country in the world, surpassed only by China and India. The U.S. also consumes the most resources. The current world population is about 7 billion, which is an estimated two or three times larger than the Earth’s resources can currently sustain. The U.S. alone has leveled over 10 million acres of forests to provide urban areas for people to live since 1980. By creating more places for more people to live, the U.S. is losing the resources to support them.
The U.S. has a population of about 300 million and is growing slowly, but steadily. The population of the U.S. is projected to grow to 400 million by 2050, even though birth and death rates are about even, due to immigration. Immigration increases the U.S. population by about 2.25 million people per year, with 1.5 of those immigrants coming to the U.S. illegally. If the U.S. wants to control population growth, it will have to create a stricter immigration policy.
Yes, but education is already doing that. As long as we educate people about contraception, I think that they will make the right choices for the most part. I admire China for implementing a strict one child policy and distributing government-issued condoms, but unfortunately due to the value that their culture places on sons, little girls are being abandoned (often adopted by Americans) and now there are way too many males in the country. Since women and girls are in short supply, they are being abducted and sold as wives.
I think that a one child policy would work better in the United States because many parents actually prefer female children. My boyfriend and I are talking about adopting an abandoned Chinese girl some day.
I think we do need to be worrying about it right now, especially as some parts of state and federal government continually attempt to cut funding to Planned Parenthood and try to pass ridiculous laws that could make some birth control unavailable in some states. An organization in Georgia is fighting against PP and actually accusing them of promoting genocide of minorities. Positive action and education is the best thing that we can do. Planned Parenthood is an important organization in this issue because it provides a safe and cost-effective way for women and men to reproduce (or not reproduce) healthily and responsibly.
Our current energy and food policies and urban development cannot support our population growth. Inefficient energy use and heavily processed foods cannot sustain a high population growth without significant damage to not only our bodies but also to our resources. Consumption per person has increased and only education can help people understand and achieve a more moderate lifetyle. Our land has the capability to support more than 300 million people, we just need to adjust or policies in regards to resource usage and food distribution and creation.
