Butterflies such as the Monarch, painted lady, cabbage butterfly, red admiral, and clouded yellow usually migrate when current habitats get too cold. Most butterflies will migrate during the winter to warmer places, and then fly back to their original habitats during the spring.
Butterflies migrate in the winter, just like birds. They go to south and central America and even Mexico to seek refuge from their colder habitat in the USA and Canada, to which they return in the summer. The Monarch Butterfly is famous for its migration habits.
