Before it was used for electricity, wind power was used in food production. In 1887, the first windmill created for electrical production was built in 1887 in Scotland. Then, in 1888, the first electricity-generating wind turbine in the U.S. was built.
As merrygolds noted, we have had the technology to produce electricity with wind turbines since 1887. The first wind farm didn’t come on the scene until a century later when 20 turbines were installed in southern New Hampshire in 1980.
