Stem cells have been used medicinally for quite some time. The French began experimenting with bone marrow transplants in the 1950s, and within a decade researchers discovered how to successfully transplant bone marrow between siblings. The first successful transplant between unrelated persons occurred in 1973. Bone marrow is considered a multipotent, or adult, stem cell.
