In the early 1900’s, problems were encountered storing gasoline; it would evaporate quickly. A research project began in 1910 under the direction of chemist Walter Snelling to find a solution to the problem of evaporation. In 1911, he developed a method to separate propane and butane from natural gas. The following year the American Gasol Co. was established as the first propane marketer when he discovered propane’s usefulness for lighting and metalworking. In 1927, over a million gallons of propane were sold in the US.
