US supermarkets started using plastic grocery bags in 1977, though they didn’t have handles until 1982. By 1996, four out of five grocery bags were plastic bags. That’s the same ratio we have today.
In 1977 the plastic grocery bag was introduced to stores, giving customers an alternative to paper sacks. By 1996 over 80% of all bags being used were plastic.
It can be traced back to around 1974 when large retailers such Sears, JC Penny and other switched to plastic bags to carry goods. In 1977, the plastic bag was used by supermarkets to carry groceries instead of paper sacks.
