Although it only produced a small amount of electricity, the first nuclear reactor used for energy, called the Experimental Breeder, started in December 1951 in Idaho. The “Atoms For Peace” program, created by President Eisenhower in 1953, was the main cause for the shift of nuclear research towards energy production rather than weapon production. It was not until 1960 that nuclear energy became available on a commercial scale and companies like General Electric began utilizing it.
