In 1932, a gas helium model of hot air balloon was proven safe for humans at high altitudes. This sparked hot air balloon use for aviation travel!
In 1783, the first manned hot air balloon flight took place. Though it was not until 1785 that hot air balloons were used to travel long distances. John Jefferies became the first to fly across the English Channel via hot air balloon. Later that year however, Pilartre de Rozier died in a flight attempt. No major attempts were made again until 1793, when Jean Pierre Blanchard became the first to fly a hot air balloon in North America.
