When did we start using granite as countertops?

Granite was first used for counter tops in the Roman Empire.  During the time the public baths that were popular in Rome were constructed of granite.  It was not until modern times though, that granite was commonly found throughout the household.  This is because there have been recent innovations in quarrying techniques.  Additionally, society has recently become concerned with the environment, and eco-friendly materials.  Granite has become popular because it is a natural stone.
