The first prototype of a gasoline engine was built in 1885. Before that, inventors had tried to create engines using everything from coal gas, to gunpowder, to kerosene.
There is much debate about the first true gas-powered car, but the first gasoline-powered vehicle was built in the 1870s by Siegfried Marcus.
In 1886, Gottlieb Daimler built the first four-wheeled gas-powered vehicle with an engine that is recognizable compared to the modern combustion engine.
