E85, the blended fuel combo of 15 perfect gasoline and 85 percent ethanol, has been increasing in use over the last 25 years more or less. The first use of ethanol as fuel occurred in 1908 with the Ford Model T which could run on gasoline or pure alcohol. The 1973 Arab Oil embargo caused a great push to move away from total gasoline dependence, leading to the Energy Tax Act of 1978 which provided incentives to use fuel that was at least a 10 percent blend of ethanol. Since then, legislation has been passed to further encourage the use of blended fuels.
