When did we start using coal for power?

    Coal was used by North American Indians before European settlers ever arrived on the continent. Europeans discovered coal here in the early seventeen century. Coal, though, was a minor source of energy until the nineteenth century. Initially, colonial inhabitants relied primarily on waterwheels and wood.
