When did we start using chlorine to clean our water?

Chlorine was first used to purify water in 1850 as John Snow attempted to purify London’s water supply after a cholera outbreak.  It was later used again in 1897 by Sims Woodhead in Maidstone, Kent, England.  After continual success in England, chlorine use made its way to the US in 1908 in New Jersey’s water supply.
