Paul Ehrlich, a German bacteriologist, first came up with the idea of chemotherapy and was even awarded a Nobel Prize in 1908. However, his principles were not put into practice until the 1950s. As a result of WWII the use of mustard gas was found to effectively treat cancer cells. This became the first type of chemotherapy though there are other treatments today.
