When did we start using chain saws to cut down trees?

Depends on your definition of a chain saw, but the first handheld gasoline-powered mechanical saw was patented in 1929 and was called the “tree-felling machine.” It was invented by engineer Andreas Stihl. Earlier attempts largely involved man-powered machines, a saw that used a hand crank in 1861 and a saw connected to a sort of rowing machine in the 1880s. The actual first chain saw probably came from 1830, by a great innovatornamed Bernard Heine. However, Heine used it in his own trade, surgery and prosthetics, so it was not used on trees.
