Centuries ago! Since bricks and pottery are included, the use of ceramics in everyday life goes back over 2,000 years!
The oldest known ceramic objects are the Paleolithic Gravettian “Venus” figurines of Central Europe. These date from 29,000-25,000 BCE. No one knows exactly what these figurines meant, but their purpose was definitely ceremonial or symbolic, not practical.
The oldest known pottery vessels were discovered in Yuchanyan Cave in China’s Hunan Province. They are believed to be 17,500 to 18,000 years old. The oldest known kernels of rice were found in the same cave.
Because of its durability, pottery is an important source of information for archeologists.
