Technically, lightning does come from the ground; in a storm, electric charge builds in the earth, and when the charge of negative ions in the cloud reaches within 100 yards of the ground, positive ions from the ground rush toward the ionized air, releasing electricity. Scientific research on lightning was performed in the 1960’s.
