When did we start taking oil from the tar sands?

Bitumen, the crude oil component of tar sands (which technically ought to be called oil sands), has been used by people since ancient times. In the modern world, however, commercial operation began in 1967 at the Athabasca Oil Sands. Similar oil production has been taking place in not-quite-oil sand resources in California since the 1950s.
