Storing nuclear waste has been an ever changing process as we are still learning what works and what does not. For short term storage, it has been common practice for a while now to “cool down” the spent rods in pools next to the nuclear facilities. After that, there have been several ways of doing things, but they all share the same basic idea. We want to cover up the waste and get it to where it can no longer be a problem, so most of the time it is burried. Looking to the future, the Yucca Mountain area is looking like it’s going to be the next place for the waste to go. This has been the plan for a couple years now.
