Typically, a civilization starts shaping metals during its bronze age. Various civilization have gone through the bronze age at different points in time, the earliest was the Near East civilization (Ancient Greece, Egypt, The Levant) in the period from 3300-1200BC.
Pure copper was pounded into shapes about 10,000 years ago; copper was cast about 8400 years ago. A bronze rod in the Bent Pyramid about 2600 BC, or 4600 years ago.
