According to this site, the advent of landfills dates back thousands of years, when the first records of landfills were documented in the city of Knossos on the Greek island of Crete. However, the Fresno Sanitary Landfill (FSL) was the first modern landfill to open in the United States. It opened in 1937 and accepted municipal waste from the City of Fresno in California, operating until 1987. The FSL was the first landfill to use compaction.
