I do not think people realized the extent that the ice caps were melting until the 1990’s. We could not physically see pictures of them until after the Apollo missions, and the Blue Marble picture (seen here http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/0004/bluemarble2k_big.jpg&imgrefurl=http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap000420.html&h=1050&w=1024&sz=916&tbnid=h2kU6mvRHVnkCM:&tbnh=150&tbnw=146&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dblue%2Bmarble%2Bpicture&hl=en&usg=__FMHU6hy0ZbdcUD1mYQrjrOR3A2c=&ei=Y7-_SpPnKsXj8Qb7xKS0AQ&sa=X&oi=image_result&resnum=2&ct=image)
But also it took time to physically study them, and ice core samples were not taken until the 1990s as well. We have compared pictures from the 1970’s to what we have today and can see ample evidence that they are melting at an alarming rate.
