Oil production for commercial purposes began in America in the mid 19th century. Titusville, Pennsylvania is said to be the home to the first modern oil-producing well in America. In 1859, Edwin Drake was the first to drill in a particular area with the specific intention of extracting oil. The extracted oil was then sold as fuel for kerosene lamps.
