Farmers have always saved seeds of the crops they planted, but the modern seed bank was probably invented in 1926 by Russian scientist Nikolai Vavilov, who established the Pavlovsk agricultural station as a repository of agricultural varieties in case of famine. 12 Russian scientists famously starved to death during the siege of Leningrad rather than cosume the seeds held there. Sadly, Pavlovsk is currently under threat from developers, who argue that since it is priceless, it has no worth, and that since it was never officially registered with the government, it does not exist. Hopefully such a precious resource will not be destroyed.
