Wave power generation was invented in 1799 – based on a patent filed in France. In 1910 there was an early device used to light and power a house in France. In 1940, a Japanese naval commander, Yoshio Masuda, experimented with oscillating water column devices that powered navigation lights at sea. The first commercial wave power plant opened in 2008 in Portugal. At the moment there are many commercial-scale applications and technologies, but almost all are still in the researching stage, or in pilot testing, or are being constructed.
