Some of the earliest street lights were gas lights lit by lamplighters at dusk. Some say the earliest street lights were in the Arab Empire. The first time electricity was used to light a city was at a department store in Paris in the late 1870s, through the use of the “Yablochknov candle,” a carbon arc lamp employing alternating current.
