Deforestation one of the causes of modern global warming, the effects of which became pronounced in the mid-20th century. Forests soak up a large amount of the carbon that is released into the atmosphere (whether by natural or human causes), so removing them causes there to be a higher concentration of this greenhouse gas.
Locally, deforestation has been a problem for as long as people have been cutting down trees. It reduces the amount of rainfall nearby, which local people depend on to survive. In hunting societies, deforestation wipes out a huge number of the species they depend on for food.
