Some people would say that animals are endowed with rights by nature, and humans do not “give” them those rights. Throughout human history, though, some people have been more sympathetic towards animals than others. And as cruelty towards animals became more connected to human desires and not human needs (ie: using animals for testing cosmetics vs. using animals for food), people in the US have become more dedicated alleviating unnecessary animal cruelty. It is interesting, though, that the history of animal rights spans far back into the Middle Ages. Documented events in the history of animal rights can be easily tracked back to the 18th and 19th century in England and America. Humans are naturally sympathetic towards other creatures (most of us, at least!).
