When did we start building public transit?

Public transit was our first form of major transportation. Boats, trains, and horse drawn coaches were here long before subways and buses. Horse drawn coaches have been used for public transportation since before America was “discovered.” They were kinda like taxis, in that you had to flag one down or hire it.  There were also some that did regular routes and you just had to be at the stops to get on it.
