While the monocrystalline technology was invented in 1955, the polycrystalline silicon solar cells came into the picture in 1981. For polycrystalline cells, the hot silicon is poured into a mold, whereas with the mono, the cells are cut from one large crystal. Most of the solar panels built nowadays use the polycrystalline solar cells. The poly is a somewhat less efficient technology than the mono, but is cheaper.
