When did we start building poly solar panels?

While the monocrystalline technology was invented in 1955, the polycrystalline silicon solar cells came into the picture in 1981. For polycrystalline cells, the hot silicon is poured into a mold, whereas with the mono, the cells are cut from one large crystal. Most of the solar panels built nowadays use the polycrystalline solar cells. The poly is a somewhat less efficient technology than the mono, but is cheaper.
