When did we realize we needed to seal off landfills?

    Starting in the 1960’s landfill operators starting sealing up the daily waste in clay or soil to exclude vermin and to ensure safety, cleanliness, and the retention of the landscape. Such “sanitary landfills” began to be required federally and by 1976 open dumping was outlawed.
