I will go ahead and say that we realized this when the first surgical removal of the kidney (Nephrectomy) was successfully completed. This was on August 2, 1869 by a German surgeon named Gustav Simon. After he proved that one kidney was sufficient for urine excretion in animals, he gave it ago on a human patient. Since then the doors to Nephrectomies have been opened. Hoped this answered your question.
