The first documented case of cancer dates back to 1600 BCE, in Egypt. It was discovered as part of the Edwin Smith Papyrus, it “describes 8 cases of tumors or ulcers of the breast that were treated by cauterization”.
The first time humans pondered about the causes of cancer was back in ancient Greece. The healer Hippocrates believed “that the body contained 4 humors (body fluids) — blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile … An excess of black bile collecting in various body sites was thought to cause cancer.”
It wasn’t really until the mid-20th century that scientists knew some exact causes of cancer, like radiation, chemicals, or viruses.
