When did we quit using giant switch boards for our telephones?

    Manual switchboard were used up to about mid-1960’s. At that point the public switchboards that required operators to make the phone connection were replaced by automatic telephone exchanges. Modern switches can still be pretty giant, although now they are digital computers that can handle tens and hundreds of thousands of customers.
