When did we make poaching illegal in the United States?

It’s tricky to give a specific date, since poaching is usually animal-specific.  As early as the 1500s, it became illegal to hunt deer in different areas of the world unless you were royalty.  By the 1700s/1800s, poachers were sometimes hanged.  States have specific punishments for poaching, ranging from a fine to 5 years imprisonment.
