While DDT was developed in 1873 its uses and an effective pesticide was not known until 1939 (a Nobel Prize winning discovery).   It was first used during WWII and its use spread when it was found to be effective for removal of crop pest insects.

After 1972 DDT was only allowed in certain instances for agricultural use.
