When did we first start using coal?

    If you refer to coal as a fuel source than massive implementation of coal was during the industrial revolution, 18th and 19th centuries. The pioneer in this field was James Watt, who patented his steam engine in 1775 and by 1780 he applied them to power machines. After his invention became popular, coal mining skyrocketed and the usage of steam engines became economical, thus paving the way to our modern lives.
