when did we first start seeing signs of desertification?

It’s difficult to locate a direct “start” to desertification — but one of the most infamous examples is the “Dust Bowl” of the 1930s.  Desertification is the degradation of “semi-arid arable land” that is turned into desert “unable to sustain plant or animal life.”

Examples of desertification may have existed long before recorded history; however, climate change and global warming definitely affect the current rate of desertification that we can witness around the world.
