The first truly rechargeable battery was invented in 1859 by a French physicist named Gaston Plante. His battery was based on the chemisty of lead acid. After the invention of lithium batteries in the 1970’s, there were attempts to develop them into rechargeable batteries. In 1991, Sony commercialized lithium-ion batteries that could be recharged.
