When did we first find the floating garbage patch in the ocean?

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also known as the Eastern Garbage Patch, was first discovered by Captain Charles Moore in 1997 after he just finished competing in a yacht race. He founded the Algalita foundation, which supports a research vessel called the Alguita. The research conducted by his crew has helped to educate the scientific community about the trash patch. He hopes to bring more attention to the significance of trash in our oceans so that international policies can be changed to address this issue.
