When did we find out a mushroom could be a hallucinogen?

Apparently, there are representations of hallucinogenic mushrooms found in the Sahara desert that have been dated to between 7000 and 9000 years ago. This means that it is quite possible that people were using mushrooms for hallucinogenic properties way before recorded history. It is possible that these hallucinogenic properties were used as the basis for religious cults, depicted in rock paintings and the like.
