When did we find out mercury was poisonous?

Alfred Stock, a German inorganic chemist, is credited with exposing the toxicity of mercury in his 1926 paper, “The Dangerousness of Mercury Vapor”. Stock discovered this after experiencing the symptoms of mercury poisoning himself and witnessing them in fellow scientists at the Kaiser Institute where mercury was often used. Stock spent the rest of his life establishing a mercury-free lab and studying the effects of the toxic substance.
