When did we find the Galapagos?

According to legend, the Incas discovered the Galapagos in the 15th century, but due to a lack of written record, there’s no evidence to support that. Of the hard evidence that we have, we know that the first New World explorer to discover the Galapagos was the Spanish Bishop of Panama, Fray Tomas de Berlanga, in 1535. Later, Caribbean pirates would use the islands as hideouts from the Spanish ships.
